Skimming

a stairs on a room
Skimming implies using a finishing plaster on either a new plasterboard or over existing walls or ceilings to create a smooth finish for painting or wall papering. It is a plastering method where a wall is painted with a layer of thin coat. Usually this is applied to an existing plaster to smooth the surface area. Although plastering and skimming are used interchangeably actually skimming is technique of plastering. If you are fixing a whole in the wall or evening out surfaces for instance then it is a plastering job but if it is applying a coat on top of an existing plaster or on plaster board then that is  regarded as skimming. For a good finish you require a professional skimmer with the right level of skill and speed.

Skim Plaster
To get the perfect smooth finish, there has to be a right level of mix and blend of the skim plaster. A combination of manual blending and the use of high torque mechanical whisks can yield the perfect mix. Skim plaster is a very fine mix with high wet adhesion to make it easy to apply. As our target is to get the perfect finish we can also divide up areas to be skimmed with stop end beads – the grids that plaster adheres to in order to work on smaller sections with the focus required to produce perfect skim.

Timing
Timing in skimming is key. If the plaster is applied incorrectly or even allowed to set while the smoothing process is on-going it may lead to a bad outcome. As skim plaster sets so fast it needs to be worked on as smoothly and as quickly as humanly possible and that's what makes skimming a job best left to the experts. Our skilled and qualified plasterers have hundreds of hours of experience of smooth skim application and so you can rely on us for perfect finish.

Multiple Coats
Similar to painting, the best results with skimming come from making a number of passes with multiple coats and building it up with repeated thin layers of skim. As skim dries so quickly this doesn't mean the job will take forever. However it does require expertise to know how many coats, and the right timing to apply each coat. We'll be happy to guide you on just what your particular skimming job entails that will result in perfectly smooth skim finish, without any trowel marks or uneven patches. Just as we adhere to the different SR (Surface Regularity) ratings of floor screeding from the construction industry, we can also talk about your specific requirements when it comes to the level of perfection of your skimming – from glass smooth to utility.

Ceilings
In addition, to skimming walls to get the perfect smooth, we also skim ceilings despite the obvious difficulties with working on an overhead surface. With the speed and skill required our team can apply the perfect skim to any ceiling. Whether you are looking to refresh an existing plastered surface with a new all over skim, with the ceiling to match, or if you are looking for a new drywall division and suspended ceiling combination as you reassign spaces in a building, we are the team you need to apply that perfect skim and leave the walls and ceilings looking in absolutely perfect condition. We combine our ability to skim ceiling with screeding skills for floors making us the experts you would need for any new construction, renovation or remodelling job.
